Depot
In the logistics industry, the term is used synonymously with transshipment warehouse/distribution warehouse/distribution centre. The depot refers to a warehouse that is purely used to temporarily store delivered goods. It is not a permanent warehouse, but the goods are only stored there until they are transported further. In the depot, goods are not only stored, but also processed (bundled/separated) and loaded.
It is indispensable for economical transport, especially in the area of general cargo transport for parcel services. It is used to collect individual parcels to various receivers and from various senders. Intermediate storage in the depot allows the parcels to be grouped and shipped as grouped loads.
In air and sea freight, the term is used for so-called container depots (empty container pick-up/return depot). This is where importers can drop off their empty containers and exporters can collect empty containers for shipment. In addition to storage, services such as inspection, maintenance and cleaning of containers are also carried out there.
