Main Carriage
The main carriage is the main section in a transport chain in freight transport. It is situated between the pre-carriage and the on-carriage, which are usually kept short. This division of the logistics chain only applies to combined (interrupted) transports and grouped-load transports that are not handled via direct transport.
The forwarder collects the general cargo that is to be transported to different receivers in advance. The general cargo is sorted and grouped in a logistics centre. All these steps are part of the pre-carriage. After the individual consignments have been consolidated and loaded onto means of transport, the main carriage begins. It represents the transport to the logistics centre of the receiving forwarder in the respective destination region. In the subsequent on-carriage, the consignments are sorted, distributed and transported to the receivers.
Pre-carriage and on-carriage are usually carried out by road transport (local transport), whereas the main carriage is carried out with long-distance transport vehicles such as trains or vessels, which have greater transport capacity.
The TMS CarLo and the add-on CarLo inAIR&SEA also display the pre-, main and on-carriage as parts of an intermodal transport chain.
